Few among psychologists imagine the work of a specialist on sects. And most ordinary people probably don’t even know that such a direction of psychological activity exists. Here I will lift the veil of this mystery and describe the three most popular constructive and destructive types of requests to a specialist for this kind of help. To remember them better, I’ll give them memorable names, starting with the destructive ones: 1. “Call from the underworld.” A long stay in a sectarian organization or visits to psychics often leads a person to madness and a psychiatric clinic. Sometimes the sect simply gets rid of clearly insane people, and no one needs them. In objective reality, such people are no longer able to organize their lives, and they, like in hell, experience constant torment and suffering in ordinary life. Appeals in the style: I was fond of such and such esoteric practices, and then I went crazy and ended up in a psychiatric clinic - quite popular. The whole problem of these people is this: due to their inadequacy, they do not realize the situation they find themselves in and do not understand what they need to do to fix it. They are not even able to formulate a sane request to a specialist. Usually they want some kind of sympathy, understanding and that at least someone will take care of them. But! Without any psychological or psychiatric work! Their entire “appeal” usually ends with a call telling them their life story. Such people, as a rule, do not reach a specialist. If you or your loved one spent 5-10 years in a sect, then the amount of psychological work to restore the psyche can take 300 hours. As a rule, neither the person himself nor his relatives realize the scale of this work, and as a result, they do not even attempt to somehow begin this work. 2. “Paranoid in touch.” The most common thing that a person gets after a short stay in a sect is delusional disorder. Nonsense is not some unfounded set of words, as most ordinary people think. Delirium is often very logical in its grammatical structure. Delusions are ideas and reasoning that are completely untrue. For example, those who often believe in all sorts of nonsense, for example in NLP, astrology or the practices of Carlos Castaneda, strive in every possible way to defend their crazy idea. They are ready to “reason”, trying to prove that “you are wrong.” And if you point out their obvious mistakes, they usually call it “getting personal” or say that this is “your personal opinion, which is of little importance to me.” Their entire “appeal” is reminiscent of Chekhov’s story “Letter to a Learned Neighbor.” Yes, please, everything can be discussed, just do it in the office of a psychologist or psychiatrist at the appropriate rate. No one will just waste time on an illiterate person with a delusional mental disorder. Delirium is extremely difficult to treat and it usually takes 10-20 meetings for a person, as many relatives want, to come to his senses and start thinking with his own head (without an instilled delusional concept). 3. "Solve all my problems in one meeting!" Bringing a person out of the sectarian illusory world is a rather lengthy, multi-stage work. It begins with information collection and diagnostics. This first stage lasts 2-3 meetings. Most sectarians and their relatives are completely unfamiliar with what psychology is and how it works. And without receiving everything at once, for example, a healthy and thinking relative, liquidation of a sect and harmonization of family relationships, elimination of depression and getting rid of complexes, improving mood and acquiring the skills to establish strong social contacts in one! a person, as a rule, does not go to a second meeting))) Constructive appeals: 1. "Reinsurance." Sometimes relatives “sound the alarm” after attending dubious trainings and changes in the psyche of their loved one. Timely contact with a specialist will help prevent a serious problem in the first place..
