In the period from approximately 1975 to 1983. the large American telephone company Illinois Bell was reorganizing, radically changing the principle of operation, and employees were experiencing enormous stress. 40,000 workers were laid off. A research team led by American psychologist Salvatore Maddi found that 2/3 of managers (out of a total of 450 people) reacted to this stressful situation with deteriorating health, decreased work efficiency, and deteriorated relationships with loved ones. Increased blood pressure, migraines, depression, divorce, and suicidal thoughts were noted. The rest of the employees felt healthy and noted strengthened relationships with loved ones. We worked more efficiently and generated ideas. If you left the company, you succeeded in other places or started your own business. Why is there such a difference? S. Maddi defined it in the presence/absence of resilience - the ability of an individual to withstand a stressful situation, while maintaining internal balance and harmony, which is ensured by a system of attitudes and beliefs about oneself and the world. He noted these resilient attitudes as: Risk Taking The belief that change and stress are a natural part of life. Any life situation is at least a valuable experience that can contribute to personal growth and understanding of life processes. The opposite is a sense of threat, distrust. involvement. The belief that even in unpleasant and difficult situations, relationships with people, it is better to be involved: to be aware of events, in contact with others, the desire to build relationships based on mutual assistance and support. Devote time and attention to what is happening, make an effort, participate. The opposite of this is aloofness. control The desire to influence the outcome of events. Changes and difficulties are perceived as a task waiting to be solved. A person thinks, determines what steps need to be taken for this. If the situation cannot be changed, he chooses to accept the situation and reevaluate what is happening. Maximizes what is useful for himself from a difficult situation: observations, findings, ideas, wisdom in order to grow and develop as a person. The opposite of control is helplessness. I see a resilient person as open, resilient, hardened, courageous, persistent, and decisive. He strives for cooperation, interaction, believes in himself, and is creative. And the best part is that anyone can develop these qualities if they wish. How does he seem to you? resilient person.
