Psychological defense mechanisms are unconscious methods through which a person protects himself from negative experiences and psychological trauma. Let’s remember what the main psychological defense mechanisms are: denial, regression, compensation, replacement, projection, repression, rationalization, overcompensation, sublimation. These mechanisms were discovered by the well-known Uncle Freud. I will not describe the actions of these mechanisms here now. That's not what the article is about. When you are in psychotherapy, after some time all psychological defense mechanisms disappear from you. With psychological defense mechanisms, life is not real. She seemed to be under anesthesia, painless. Of course you can live this way and many people live this way. But our life with them becomes distorted. We unconsciously “put them on” when we experience some unbearable feelings, so as not to feel pain. Life without “anesthesia” in the form of psychological defense mechanisms, what is it like? Without defenses, you become like a bare wire, and you feel “alive” all your life. This is not bad, but on the contrary, it is a natural process. You feel pain in full force, you can feel anxiety more strongly, you react more sharply to some external events. And these are very interesting sensations, although many are afraid of them. It happens that a client who does not want to part with this “anesthesia” and meet his real self leaves therapy. Because many are afraid to live their feelings and constantly stuff themselves with “anaesthesia” from real life. Living without “anesthesia” due to psychological defense mechanisms and withstanding reality is only possible when you already have enough internal supports. In therapy, the stronger you become, the denser your psyche becomes, the more adaptive you are and can be in contact with reality. You learn to live, cope and realize that you are stronger than all these feelings and you can withstand them. Without defenses, you feel yourself, you feel life more fully, you get to know your real self.
