Our mind seeks to be right. Why does he need this? But what if you turn out to be right, then you are on a horse and you are successful in this world. You already feel important, and this is so nice, so sweet! We like to win an argument. Victory is winning! Backfire effect Scientists have described the backfire effect. What is this effect? Each of us has certain beliefs. Which are dear to us and which we are not ready to give up. When they want to convince us and provide evidence that contradicts our beliefs, we are more likely to defend our beliefs than to agree with the arguments and revise our beliefs. Please note - this is a very important effect! Why does this happen? An MRI study was conducted and an interesting phenomenon was discovered. It turns out that the brain processes information that contradicts our beliefs in those brain structures where information about pain is received. Consequently, the brain recognizes information that contradicts our beliefs as a threat. Therefore, for our brain, such information is perceived as physical pain! What do you lose when you prove that you are right? Your victory inevitably leads to losses. It is important to think about how your victory will affect your loved ones who want to be heard? For winning the competition to be right, you have to pay by moving away from your loved ones. Have your efforts to prove that you are right have brought you closer? When is it important for us to prove that we are right? There may be different variations. However, the mechanism is common. We prove ourselves right when we feel vulnerable. The brain perceives wrongness as a danger that causes pain. Therefore, the mask of rightness is a kind of way of avoiding this pain and vulnerability. Therefore, the willingness to accept your vulnerability makes you more flexible and opens the path to self-knowledge. Exercise Vulnerability Practice This exercise consists of three steps: When you want to prove that you are right, then pause. During the pause determine what you are afraid of? What will offend you? Are you afraid of being disappointed? Are you afraid of being wrong? Are you afraid of making mistakes? Maybe something else? 3. When you determine what you are afraid of, then you have a choice: continue to defend your rightness or act differently and not hide behind the mask of rightness. What choice do you make?
