Why do you need a psychologist if the child speaks poorly? Usually, when children have any speech disorders, parents turn to speech therapists for help. Speech therapists eliminate these disorders and develop the child’s speech. But speech as a mental process actively influences and is interconnected with other mental processes, such as thinking, attention, memory, perception. For example, speech and thinking represent a unity, since speech is a form of existence of thought. Thinking, attention, memory, perception, spatial representations are basic and decisive for successful learning at school. Thus, mathematics is built on the basis of spatial concepts, in reading attention and memory are more involved, in writing - perception, attention, and motor skills. These cognitive processes are developed by a psychologist, laying the foundation for learning at school. In each age group, this foundation has its own normative results. For example, children develop spatial concepts in the following way. First, the child masters the diagram of his own body (body part), and then transfers this to external space and only then builds logical-grammatical speech structures. It is also important that mental processes are gradually transferred from an involuntary status to a voluntary one. The entire school system is built on the child's volition. This means that children manage their attention, control and program their behavior. External speech turns into internal speech. The psychologist diagnoses cognitive processes: thinking, attention, memory, perception. Reveals weaknesses in the development of higher mental functions. Then targeted work with these functions occurs. As a result, a basic prerequisite is created for the full participation of cognitive processes in mastering reading, writing and mathematical knowledge. So, if your child speaks poorly or has general underdevelopment of speech, it is necessary to determine whether there is a deficit of any mental functions and, if so, correct it.
