In family and child psychology, parents are told that it is very important to create rituals for children. Read a book in the evening, brush your teeth, stroke your head. All this helps to calm down. When we know what will happen, when we expect it, we have support and predictability. Rituals are important for adults too. All neuroscientists and psychologists say that to better integrate habits into your life, you need to create a series of rituals for yourself. By expecting a morning or evening ritual, we bring the habit to automatism, and this helps the nervous system to reboot. Small morning and evening rituals help to tune in to the day or finish it carefully. Drink water, do breathing practices, brush your teeth - all this tells the brain that the day has begun, now there will be a lot of activity. We tell the brain that it’s time to move to another state. When we do rituals automatically, we don’t spend any energy on energy, but we get benefits.👉 There are global rituals in culture - weddings, birthdays, moving. But so many have already been lost, and this creates a lot of stress at moments of important life crises and transitions. Rituals help to understand the transition from one role to another. One striking example is a wedding. When a girl takes on the role of a wife through the role of a bride. If earlier she lived in the status of a bride for a whole year, now a bride means from 9 to 12, when a makeup artist puts on your makeup before the wedding. The lack of rituals does not allow the psyche to adapt and creates tension. It seems like we grew up, got married, but the stages and roles didn’t seem to change. There are also cultural rituals. I really like the Celtic wheel of the year. As the granddaughter of an ethnographer, I love such historical and cultural moments. I even periodically celebrate holidays from the Wheel of the Year, because natural transitions allow us to understand what to do next in the next season. For example, even Maslenitsa shows that winter is ending, spring is about to come. Pay attention, what rituals are there in your life? What benefits do they provide? Do you have special rituals accepted only in your family??
